The existing ammonia production is responsible for more than 1% of the world's carbon emissions. Industry decarbonization can be achieved by switching to green (water electrolysis) or blue (CO2 capture, sequestration and utilization) ammonia production, although not all ammonia applications can be quickly decarbonized. In addition, new opportunities open up for ammonia: the use of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier and as an alternative carbon-free fuel. The development of a new industry of carbon-free ammonia for the energy needs depends both on further developments in technology (electrolysis, integration of electrolysis and ammonia synthesis, hydrogen storage and other solutions needed to reduce the cost of “green” ammonia) and on regulatory decisions (defining the concept of carbon-free ammonia , certification, structuring the market for "green" and "blue" ammonia, developing the market for carbon emissions and carbon taxes, etc.).
